Offensive Love (with Luke Adler)
In this episode I'm joined by Dr. Luke Adler to talk about offensive love, a phrase that came out of our shadow work group a year ago.
Shadow work is the process of making conscious what has been running you without your permission. Your shadow is whatever you disowned or never got to feel, usually because feeling it as a boy was not safe. Your nervous system built armor around it, the armor worked, and then you grew up and forgot you were wearing it. The part most people miss is sitting right there in the name. Shadow is what you cannot see from where you are standing, which is why reading another book about it rarely moves anything, and why other men tend to spot yours in about ten minutes. Jason Lange and Dr. Luke Adler have taken hundreds of men through The Heart of Shadow, and what actually moves in that room is old grief, fear, anger and shame finally getting metabolized in the body.
If you landed here, you probably have something you keep doing that you know is costing you, and you do it anyway. Or you feel flat and tired and no amount of thinking has touched it. These episodes go at the roots. "What Protected You When You Were Young Is the Barrier to Getting What You Want as an Adult" names the mechanism. "Shadow Work for Depression" looks at the anger stuck underneath with nowhere to go. "Shadow Work for Nice Guys" takes on the survival response most men mistake for personality. Start wherever the title lands in your chest.
