HOW TO CREATE POLARITY IN RELATIONSHIPS

Attraction runs on difference. When two people occupy the same energy all the time, the charge between them fades, no matter how much they love each other. Here is the whole practice of generating it on purpose.

WHAT IS POLARITY IN A RELATIONSHIP?

Polarity in a relationship is the practice of difference: the energetic contrast between masculine and feminine energy that creates attraction. Think of two magnets. Opposite ends pull toward each other, and matching ends push apart. When two people occupy the same energy all the time, the charge between them fades, no matter how much they love each other. Creating polarity means learning to generate that difference on purpose.

I'm Jason Lange, founder of Evolutionary Men. I've spent years coaching men and couples on exactly this, having trained with John Wineland and Dr. Robert Glover, and I've had this conversation on hundreds of calls with men. This page covers what polarity actually is, why it fades, and how to create it again, whether you're dating or twenty years married.

WHY THE SPARK FADES

Every relationship starts with automatic polarity. Everything about her is unknown. Where does she like to eat? What's her favorite movie? What does she look like naked? Novelty is difference, and difference is charge, and your hormones do all the work for free.

Then the lines cross. I call it the relationship inflection point. Time together goes up, and the unknown goes down. You know the story she tells at parties. You can finish her sentences. You've built something real: trust, sameness, a shared life. And somewhere in there, most couples notice the charge is gone.

“We get along great. We're best friends. And we haven't had sex in two years.”

That sentence, or one just like it, is what I hear on call after call. Nobody did anything wrong. Closeness grew and difference shrank, because nobody was tending difference. Most of us were never taught that we're supposed to.

Early polarity is automatic. Lasting polarity is a practice. After the inflection point, you generate erotic charge intentionally or you don't have it. The couples who stay lovers for decades are running that practice, consciously or not.

THE THREE STATES OF A RELATIONSHIP

When I diagnose a relationship with a man, I'm listening for which of three states he's in.

01  ·  REVERSED

The polarity exists but it's flipped against each partner's home energy. He's abdicated direction entirely, so she drives everything: finances, romance, decisions. It feels like grinding gears. If you get honest, there's often a subtle repulsion. Left long enough, reversed polarity curdles into resentment on both sides.

02  ·  NEUTRAL

Nothing is reversed. Nothing is charged either. You're the same, all the time: friendly, cooperative, flat. This is the roommates state, where most long-term couples quietly land once the hormones wear off. You co-run the household, and you could be describing your best friend.

03  ·  POLARIZED

You know how to evoke difference when you want it. Not 100% of the time; nobody lives there. A polarized couple relaxes into sameness for the Tuesday logistics, then deliberately generates charge: he steps fully into his masculine, she relaxes into her feminine, and the current switches back on.

The good news hiding in this map: the state you're in is not a verdict on your relationship. It's a description of a practice you haven't started yet. In the masterclass, Melanie and I take this map deeper, including what each state feels like from her side of the dynamic.

THE MASCULINE SIDE OF THE PRACTICE

You can't control your partner. You can only take responsibility for your half of the charge. In my experience coaching men, these four moves account for most of the shift.

1

Lead, then listen

The masculine provides direction. Leading means inviting her into an experience you've already taken responsibility for. Dominating has nothing to do with it. “Where do you want to eat?” hands her the job. “I booked the Thai place you mentioned, be ready at seven” hands her an experience. A time, a place, a plan. Then listen: her response tells you whether it lights her up, and you adjust from there.

My wife runs her own business and leads powerfully all day. After a full day of that, the last thing she wants is to direct me too. When I take the lead and then actually listen, she gets to put leadership down. That relaxation you'll see in her shoulders and hear in her voice is where attraction lives.

2

Tend the fire instead of expecting sparks

When you first met there were sparks. Sparks don't last; a flame you tend does. Foreplay isn't the five minutes before sex. Foreplay is the water you swim in all week: playfulness, touch that isn't a request for anything, noticing her out loud, clearing the resentments that hang in the air and kill eros.

A blunt question I ask men, and I include myself in this practice: why would she want to have sex with you? Not as a shame prompt. As a genuine inventory. Presence, connection, set and setting. When you tend those, eroticism starts flowing on its own.

3

Feel your desire and let her feel it

Most nice guys withhold their desire to prove they're safe. What she experiences is a man who's hiding something, and hidden attraction reads as untrustworthy. Your desire, held with integrity while you stay connected to your heart, is usually what ignites hers. Feel it in your whole body and let it show in how you look at her. Waiting to feel wanted first runs the current backwards.

4

Provide the spark from your own life

Polarity in the relationship starts with charge in you. When a man says “I'm not happy, and I'm going to start taking care of myself. I'd love for you to join me, and I'm doing it no matter what,” the energy in the house changes that week. Sometimes the boldest polarizing move is simply naming the truth out loud: “This isn't feeling good for either of us, is it?” Once the truth is in the room, you can actually relate again instead of managing each other.

"EARLY POLARITY IS AUTOMATIC.
LASTING POLARITY IS A PRACTICE."

POLARITY WHEN YOU'RE SINGLE

Everything above applies before a relationship exists. Leading with a specific plan on a first date, feeling your desire instead of hiding it, having a life so full that no one woman is your only source of aliveness: that IS polarity, practiced solo. The men I work with who transform their dating lives don't learn lines. They build the charge in their own body first. Attraction from the inside out.

WHAT POLARITY IS NOT

Polarity is not gender roles, and it's not tied to your sex. Masculine and feminine are energies; every person carries both, and every couple constellates differently. In plenty of great relationships the woman is the more masculine partner. What matters is knowing each partner's home energy and learning to play the difference, rather than unconsciously grinding against it. Fluidity between the energies is a superpower, and the couples who master this can generate attraction with each other into their eighties, because it was never about the body. It's about how you're being in that body.

QUESTIONS MEN ACTUALLY ASK

Is polarity just an outdated 1950s dynamic?

The 1950s version assigned polarity by gender and enforced it with economics. What I teach is chosen, conscious, and works in both directions. Modern equality solved fairness and accidentally flattened difference; polarity as a practice brings difference back without giving up the equality.

Can polarity come back after years of being roommates?

Yes, and often faster than people expect. I've watched men in decades-long marriages shift the entire dynamic in months once they took their side of the practice seriously. A willing partner accelerates it, and you can start unilaterally, because your own energy is the half you control.

We never fight, but there's no charge either. Is that polarity?

That's the neutral state, and it's the most common one I see. No conflict plus no charge usually means you've optimized for harmony and sameness. The work isn't fixing anything broken; it's introducing conscious difference back into a healthy friendship.

What if I lead and she doesn't respond?

Her response is information, not a verdict. Sometimes her system needs weeks of consistent, non-transactional leading before it trusts the change. Sometimes what surfaces is her own work to do. Practicing your side is also how you find out what's actually possible in the relationship.
